SUMMARY:Who Gets to Be Neutral? Culture\, Credibility\, and the Mediator's Seat
DESCRIPTION:Who Gets to Be Neutral? Culture\, Credibility\, and the Mediator’s Seat \n  \nClassical mediation asks the neutral third party to stand equidistant from both sides. But what happens when the parties themselves aren’t standing on equal ground? In this conversation\, we ask whether neutrality is always the right goal\, or whether it can quietly preserve the very imbalances mediation claims to address. Join NECR lecturer Dr. Dianne Williams and special guest Dr. Faith Speaks for a conversation that moves past “how do I stay neutral?” toward the harder question: what is a mediator actually accountable to? \n  \nDrawing on mediation and restorative-practice frameworks alongside Dr. Speaks’ background in counseling psychology and diversity-and inclusion-facilitation\, this session explores how personal worldviews can shape who gets read as credible in a room\, how a facilitator’s own background is never a blank slate\, and how cultural awareness operates beneath the surface of every dispute. Rather than a single-discipline take\, this is a genuinely multidisciplinary hour—psychology and conflict resolution in direct conversation—designed to give prospective students a real sense of the analytical range the NECR program cultivates. \n  \nSpeakers:\nDr. Dianne Williams\, Lecturer\, Negotiation and Conflict Resolution; International Mediator and Restorative Practitioner (moderator)\nDr. Faith Speaks\, Counseling Psychologist\, Personal and Organizational Development Consultant\nDr. Faith Speaks is a counselor psychologist\, researcher\, therapist\, educator\, civil and human rights organizer\, and community development professional whose commitment to human dignity\, justice\, education\, and social change began during her youth growing up in Brooklyn and Long Island\, New York. \n  \nFor questions about this event\, please contact Kjerstin Pugh\, kep2137@columbia.edu.

SUMMARY:All-New TriBeCa Art Gallery Walk

Organized as part of a broader art program for our club by CUCNY member Christine Keeley\, NYC Photographer and owner of @christinekeeleystudios\, you will be led on an expertly planned\, 2-hour art gallery walk of up to 8 galleries by founder of Look@NYArt\, Efren Olivares. \n  \nThis walk includes new solo shows by international artists\, including painting\, sculpture\, photography\, and more as available. TriBeCa is the fastest-growing gallery district in New York City\, with many Los Angeles\, Upper East Side and Chelsea galleries moving to this part of the city in the last 5 years. Housed in former TriBeCa factories and industrial spaces\, these large-scale loft-style galleries represent and show both established and mid-career artists. \n  \nThis walk involves the least number of steps as there are plenty of galleries within a 3-block radius. \n  \nAbout Your Guide\, Efren Olivares: After a successful 20-year career in pharmaceutical marketing at Pfizer\, Baxter\, and Lilly\, Efren returned to school\, reconnecting with the passion he had felt during his University of Pennsylvania Art History classes. He obtained a Master of Art in Modern and Contemporary Art from Christie’s Education. After working briefly at the auction house\, as an Associate Director at a Chelsea gallery\, Efren formed Look@NYArt and regularly takes groups on NYC gallery tours. Efren is a Museum Guide at the Museum of the City of New York\, has led tours at MoMA\, and regularly leads art gallery tours for alumni associations including the Penn Club of NY\, Columbia Club of New York\, Cornell Club of New York\, and many others. www.lookatnyart.com \n  \nAbout Christine Keeley: Christine is a leading New York Photographer and Director with extensive experience in commercial\, fashion and portrait photography. As a member of the Columbia University Club of New York\, Christine oversees putting together art-related programming for CUCNY members. Christine is delighted to now bring art-related programming to her beloved alma mater. www.christinekeeley.com

SUMMARY:From Fate to Foresight
DESCRIPTION:Reclaiming the Future Through Anticipatory Governance \nDickens’ David Copperfield famously remarked that “dreams are dress rehearsals for the future.” But for many\, the stage is never set. When survival becomes a daily battle\, when short-termism stifles vision\, and when the future feels like a luxury reserved for the few\, the right to dream is effectively invalidated. \nHow do we move from being spectators of our fate to the architects of our destiny?\nJoin us for a provocative and practical webinar exploring the power of public interest foresight/anticipatory governance. We will dive into how forward-thinking strategies are being used to dismantle legislative hurdles and fuel grassroots advocacy. This isn’t just about predicting what is next – it’s about transformative societal action. \nSpeakers:\nPeter Dixon\, PhD\, Program Director\, M.S. in Negotiation and Conflict Resolution; Associate Professor of Practice (moderator)\nKatindi Sivi\, PhD\, Futures Researcher\, Policy Analyst & Trainer\, is a strategist and foresight practitioner dedicated to navigating the complexities of tomorrow. Specializing in the intersection of long-term planning and public impact\, Dr. Sivi works alongside policymakers\, organizational and community leaders to translate what if into what now. By blending rigorous trend analysis with inclusive community engagement\, she helps organizations move past reactive decision-making to build proactive\, future-ready legacies. To interact more with her work\, please visit www.longviewconsult.com.\nFor questions about this event\, please contact Kjerstin Pugh\, kep2137@columbia.edu.
