SUMMARY:Addressing AI Inequality in the Global Economy @ Penn Club of NY
DESCRIPTION:Columbia University’s Professor Ben Amor (Monday\, July 28\, 2025) \nRSPV Here! \n$32.50 Per Columbia Club Member\, Includes Tax & Gratuity \n6:00 PM Wine & Cheese Reception \n6:30 PM Presentation \n7:15 – 7:30 PM Q&A \nWhile AI technologies\, particularly Large Languages Models such as ChatGPT\, offer numerous opportunities for enhancing education\, research\, and innovation\, their widespread adoption and effective utilization require substantial resources\, infrastructure\, and expertise. This discrepancy in resources between developed and developing countries could widen the gap between their respective universities\, and their ability to use or develop these AI technologies. \nThis session will explore how the availability of computational resources\, data\, expertise and talent readiness\, as well as financial resources all play a crucial role and will determine or hinder the capacity to train and deploy advanced AI models. Training AI models like ChatGPT requires significant computational power and storage capabilities. Universities in developed countries often possess powerful computing infrastructure and can afford high-performance hardware or cloud-based services for AI training. Developed countries\, with their advanced technological infrastructure and access to abundant data sources\, are also more likely to possess the necessary data for training sophisticated AI models. In addition\, developed countries tend to have a more established ecosystem for AI research and a larger pool of skilled professionals. They often attract top talent\, have well-funded research programs\, and offer extensive opportunities for collaboration. Finally\, developed countries\, with greater financial resources\, can allocate substantial funds to AI initiatives in universities\, enabling them to pursue cutting-edge research\, establish specialized AI centers\, and offer competitive salaries to AI professionals. This is in stark contrast with the resources available in developing countries. \nThe session will try to suggest solutions\, particularly for developers when designing\, developing or deploying AI models\, to prevent a widening digital divide brought by AI between the Global South and the Global North. \nAbout Speaker: \nProfessor Yanis Ben Amor is the Executive Director of the Center for Sustainable Development at the Climate School at Columbia University. He is an Assistant Professor of Global Health and Microbiological Sciences. He is also the Director of the Columbia-wide “AI and Future of Work” initiative launched with FII Institute. \nProf. Ben Amor has over 20 years of research experience developing digital tools. \nProfessor Ben Amor has developed digital tools for tuberculosis patients to facilitate their adherence\, for HIV-positive mothers to help them prevent vertical transmission of the virus\, for malaria control programs to monitor use of resources for an effective control strategy\, and more recently\, for Syrian refugees in Turkey\, Lebanon and Jordan to provide health information and healthcare access. Prof. Ben Amor has previously worked for several organizations such as the Pasteur Institute (Paris\, France). Prof. Ben Amor is currently working on several projects involving Artificial Intelligence\, as part of a digital application providing health access to vulnerable populations in Low-and-Middle-Income Countries (LMICs). Prof. Ben Amor has also launched a Columbia-wide initiative to study the impact of Artificial Intelligence on the Future of Work and Education\, with a particular focus on LMICs. \nProf. Ben Amor has a PhD in Molecular Biology. He has published widely in infectious diseases\, global health\, and prevention. He is also regularly a speaker on behalf of Columbia University and the Climate School/Earth Institute at various conferences worldwide. \nCancellation Policy: Due to financial obligations\, cancellation requests must be received 48 hours prior to the event\, otherwise you will be charged the full cost of the event. All no-shows are charged full cost.

SUMMARY:Gilded Age NYC: A Walking Tour & Networking Experience
DESCRIPTION:RSPV here! \nStep back in time and explore the echoes of the Gilded Age in New York City—an era of towering ambition\, shifting fortunes\, and lasting influence. On July 20th at 11:00 AM\, join us for a unique walking tour through the heart of Manhattan’s historic Fifth Avenue\, guided by historian Kevin Draper. Together\, we’ll trace the rise of business magnates like John Jacob Astor\, Cornelius Vanderbilt\, John D. Rockefeller\, Andrew Carnegie\, and J.P. Morgan\, and consider how their vision\, wealth\, and rivalries helped shape the physical and financial landscape of the city. \nWinding past the preserved facades of once-private mansions\, quiet clubs\, and cultural institutions\, we’ll reflect on what has endured and what has faded—from carved stone to long-contested ideals. This is more than a history lesson; it’s a chance to consider legacy\, reinvention\, and the bricks and stories that remain. \nJust as important\, this experience is designed to foster connection. Whether your interest lies in history\, architecture\, law\, business\, medicine\, science\, or culture\, you’ll be walking alongside fellow Columbia Club members—curious\, thoughtful individuals open to reflection and conversation. After the tour\, we’ll gather nearby for optional bites and drinks\, continuing the discussion in a relaxed\, social setting. \nDetails about the starting location and post-tour gathering will be shared by email after registration.

SUMMARY:Weak Strongman: The Limits of Power in Putin’s Russia

Timothy Frye offers an extremely informative and unique assessment of current Russian politics. Based on over three decades of on-the-ground experience\, and current trends in social science\, Prof. Frye’s new book\, Weak Strongman\, examines Russia’s similarities to other autocracies and assesses the challenges that the Kremlin faces today with regard to foreign policy\, propaganda\, repression\, economic interests\, varying levels of corruption\, and election fraud.  \nFrye offers startling new revelations of Russia’s delicate balancing of powers and discusses how popular is Putin\, the inherent limits to his power\, is Russian propaganda really effective\, why relations with the West are so tense\, and if Russian cyber warriors can actually influence a foreign election. Frye also offers commentary on the invasion of the Ukraine. \nLooking past Russia’s unique history and culture and Putin’s seemingly absolute power\,\, Frye highlights the challenges of governing Russia and the nature of a modern personalist autocracy. Rich in personal anecdotes\, his reassessment of Russian politics offers the best evidence available about how Russia really works.   \n \nProfessor Frye received a BA in Russian Language & Literature from Middlebury College\, an MA\, from the Columbia University’s School of International & Public Affairs as well as a PhD in political science from Columbia.
