Biography
Dr. Barbara Bollier
Retired Anesthesiologist and National Health Policy Expert
Dr. Barbara Bollier is a nationally recognized health policy expert and retired anesthesiologist from Kansas City. Dr. Bollier recently completed 11 years of service in the Kansas Senate and Kansas House of Representatives, where she served as the ranking minority member and vice chairman of the Senate Public Health and Welfare Committee. Dr. Bollier has been active in numerous national health policy groups, helping shape positions on a wide array of health policy issues. She is an expert on telemedicine policy. She ran for the United States Senate from Kansas in 2020.
Dr. Bollier is a graduate of the University of Kansas and received her M.D. from the University of Kansas School of Medicine. Her residency was at the Baylor College of Medicine. She practiced in Kansas City before retiring and pursuing her career in public service.
Dr. Alexander Friedman, JRN’04
Associate Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Columbia University
Dr. Alexander Friedman is an associate professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Columbia University. A maternal-fetal medicine specialist, Dr. Friedman has published over 100 peer-reviewed research manuscripts focusing on clinical obstetrics, perinatal epidemiology, comparative effectiveness and maternal outcomes. He has conducted research and co-authored articles on the impact of the pandemic on telemedicine. Dr. Friedman’s work has been honored by the Society of Maternal-Fetal Medicine, the Society of Obstetric Anesthesia and Perinatology and with the Sreedhar Gaddipati MD Columbia University Maternal Fetal Medicine Fellows Teaching Award. He is scientific editor of The British Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
Dr. Friedman graduated from New York University, received his MD and Master of Public Health from The Mount Sinai School of Medicine, and a MS from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. His residency was at Brown University and he completed a fellowship in maternal-fetal medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.
Dr. Alexander McLawhorn, P&S ’10, BUS ‘10
Orthopedic Surgeon, Hospital for Special Surgery
Dr. Alexander McLawhorn is an assistant attending orthopedic surgeon at the Hospital for Special Surgery. He is a minimally invasive hip and knee replacement specialist, performing over 500 joint replacements a year. An active researcher, Dr. McLawhorn’s work has been recognized nationally, including with the prestigious Frank Stinchfield Award from the Hip Society and as a health policy fellow for the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons, where his work improved national access to joint replacement. Dr. McLawhorn has co-authored several articles on doctors’ use of social media and the impact of doctor rating websites.
Dr. McLawhorn graduated from Yale University and received his M.D. and MBA from Columbia University. His residency was at the Hospital for Special Surgery, where he also completed a fellowship in adult reconstruction and joint replacement. He practices in New York City and Stamford, Conn.
This panel will be moderated by CUCNY Governor John R.D. Celock, JRN ’04. An award-winning journalist, Mr. Celock has covered public policy, including public health issues, from town hall to the U.S. Capitol. He is currently president of Celock Media Group, a communications consulting firm, and editor of The Celock Report. A former state politics reporter for The Huffington Post, he is the author of The Next Generation: Young Elected Officials and their Impact on American Politics (Continuum International Publishing 2010).
