Come explore a period of Chagall’s art from the 1930s during the rise of fascism through 1948. Chagall uses Russian folk art motifs, the Russian icon art tradition, cubism, and realism, and his work during this period Illuminates the deep suffering caused by war and fascism. It is often illustrated with Christian symbolism. There are 31 paintings and 22 works on paper, with selected letters and poems. The most prevalent image used during this period was Jesus and the crucifixion which Chagall saw as a symbol for all the suffering of persecuted people, a metaphor for the horrors of war and an appeal to conscience.
