Hallett Nature Sanctuary Tour in Central Park
During an exclusive tour of the 4-acre Hallett Nature Sanctuary led by a conservatory guide, members and guests will explore the smallest woodland environment in Central Park. The Hallett Sanctuary, originally called “the Promontory”, was closed to the public and preserved as a bird sanctuary by NYC Parks Commissioner Robert Moses since 1934. In 1986, the sanctuary was renamed in memory of George Hervey Hallett Jr., a birdwatcher, naturalist, and civic leader.
The Hallett Sanctuary remained untouched until 2001, when the Central Park Conservancy took up its restoration and maintenance. The sanctuary finalized its transformation from underused and inaccessible woodland landscape to its original grandeur of invasive and native flora and fauna in 2013. This tour lasts a little over an hour and requires walking on woodchip trails and hills. Please meet the group at the entrance of Central Park at Central Park South (59th Street) and Sixth Avenue.
