Israel Before Israel: The Prehistoric Bronze Age in the Central Jordan River Region

Join us for an intimate Israeli-themed dinner and program with the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology where you will learn about a new Penn excavation project at Tel Yaqush, Israel.   Located in Israel’s Central Jordan Valley, Yaqush is an Early Bronze Age (3500–2500 BCE) mound, occupied during one of the most dynamic millennia in world history when the first states were evolving in neighboring greater Mesopotamia and Egypt.   Excavation directors, Dr. Yael Rotem and Dr. Mitchell Rothman will speak over dinner about their new field project at Tel Yaqush beginning in summer 2018 and encompassing five excavation and two study seasons at the site. This new project will also offer up to 32 students per year a first-hand excavation experience.   Dr. Rotem is currently in the second year of a two-year appointment at the Penn Museum conducting curatorial research on its collections excavated by Penn at Beth Shean, Israel, in preparation for a new permanent gallery on the crossroads of culture among ancient Israel and its neighbors. At the end of her full-time position, she will continue her Penn Museum affiliation as a Consulting Scholar in the Near East Section.   Dr. Rothman, recently retired as chair of the Anthropology Department at Widener University, is a Penn Ph.D. and also a Penn Museum Consulting Scholar and author of a volume on the Museum’s excavations at Tepe Gawra, Iraq.
